Sri Lankan Local Election Delay: Non-confidence Resolution Against the Minister

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya handed over a joint Opposition No objection to the Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils Faizar Musthafa today.
13 MPs have signed this non-confidence motion.
The Minister of Fisheries Minister Faisal Mustafa has been asked to answer the matter for the postponement of the local council election. The Joint Opposition has stated that the Minister has lost confidence in the government due to the failure to take due time.
This was the first non-confidence motion against a minister representing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party after the establishment of the national government.
The Colombo High Court yesterday (November 22, 2017) has imposed a provisional ban on implementation of the Graduate Gazette Notification for Local Government Halls.
The court yesterday announced that the interim injunction will last till 4th of December.

The petitioners pointed out through his Rid Manu that the minister was responsible for violating the recommendations proposed by the designated committee to carry out the boundary.

At the same time, Faisar Mustafa said that he would take the advice of the lawyer on the verdict delivered by the court.

Furthermore, the Election Secretariat has already decided to announce the announcement of the nomination papers for holding the local council election on the forthcoming 27th. At this stage, the Elections Secretariat is now confronted by the interim banning of the court.

However, a senior official of the Elections Secretariat has stated that a discussion on the issue will be held in the next few days.

Another non-confidence motion by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna

Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, said that the government has not fulfilled its commitment by Minister Faisar Musthafa through the interim injunction order issued by the court to the local government border gazette notification.

He also pointed out that his party will submit a no-confidence motion against minister Faiser Musthafa on this issue.

Leader of the Opposition Anura Kumara Dissanayake also said that despite the joint Opposition's disappointing proposal, he will bring another hopeless proposal against the minister.
